The phone market is severely underserved. Every time you buy a phone, there's the danger it will be a piece of junk, or become one too fast. This causes us to mostly all buy the same models, and we rush to the latest gen of whatever.

But I might not want even more pixels on my camera, or want a camera at all, or maybe I want a physical switch to control if my microphone is connected. These aren't even options on the market.

Here's how we fix it - and fix the fucking surveillance, too. Sell phones in pieces, and allow people to mix and match parts from different sellers. Make it as customizable as possible. Parts just snap together and the OS is ready to switch stuff.

Some part of your phone isn't up to snuff anymore? Switch it out. I might want a new CPU but not need a new screen. I might not want a camera at all.

For sure, this would cause less profits for Apple and Google. But the hundred other phone makers, that barely make any sales, don't have much to lose if they switch to supplying interchangeable parts.

And it might even spark a creative mania. I'll jump all over replacing the camera with a high powered laser. Or a handheld mass spectrometer, another gadget I dream about.
