Nuclear plants usually get more powerful over time, due to those small improvements. And as for the big improvements, last I looked, there are currently around 70 companies worldwide with a wide spectrum of new designs.
But that's just to illustrate that hope for future improvements is not confined to one technology. Building proven Gen. III+ reactors in series is worthwhile by itself, for the things the other sources can't do.
