Honestly I don’t know of any period in human history when women’s lives weren’t prioritized over the fetus they might be carrying. An adult capable of childbearing was the sum of a huge social investment, not to mention part of the social fabric. It took a lot longer and many more resources to produce another grown woman than another live birth infant (even then with only 50% odds of survival, needing a grown woman to nurse it.)

It has actually *never* been this bad.
