Someone pointed me to Ayoba.me last night. They claim to have 25M monthly active users¹ and are using #XMPP. They have an XMPP server running on xmpp.ayoba.me and addresses are in the sha1(e164)@ayoba.me format.
When you decompile the APK it appears as if the app was originally based on the GPLv3 licensed Kontalk.net (which uses the same address format).
The XMPP server has client certificate login enabled (which also matches what Kontalk is doing).
