I don't know that it began with Star Wars, but that franchise has IMHO contributed to it. I used to get into arguments about whether it actually is scifi - to me, it's a fantasy film set in space. But people seem to understand genres mostly based on superficial markers.
At some point I encountered something about SF as an abbreviation that can mean "speculative fiction", which fits better what I am often interested in.
So I'd say the SF/scifi divide is widening.
