in my experience: you can but it's going to act funny, more like a wash than a paint (also depends on the opacity, which can vary from one oil paint to another even of the similar colors). You will also need more dense layers, and you won't be able to mix oil paint with linseed oil/turpentine or whatever you usually mix to make oil paint less dense/more mixable

Adding some gesso sounds smart but that will also thicken your painting and create a very specific look.
