popular sci fi is in a slump at the moment. Unfortunately it seems like it has to have a lot of action sequences or else it just doesn’t get green lit.
I think but I’m not 100% sure this started in the early 80’s with the rise of Star Wars. I use Star Trek: The Motion Picture as an example. I loved that movie. I also really like The Wrath of Khan.
But people don’t remember the early Star Trek movies for huge self aware spaceships and “carbon based units.” They remember “khaaaaaaaaan!!!!”
There’s always exceptions, just something I’ve noticed over the years.
