C is still used quite heavily in kernels, embedded systems, and performance-critical code, but not much for most other things these days.

C++, Java, C#, Python, Ruby, and JavaScript were the next steps up in abstraction.

AI-assisted development is just the next level of abstraction we’re at right now.
